Private Duty Nursing — Frequently Asked Questions

Private Duty Nursing provides skilled, one-on-one nursing care in the home for children with complex medical needs who require ongoing monitoring and care beyond what family members can safely provide alone. Nurses deliver services such as medication administration, tube feedings, trach and vent care, seizure monitoring, and other physician-ordered treatments.

  • A medically fragile condition requiring continuous nursing care,
  • Medicaid eligibility, and
  • A physician’s order confirming the need for skilled nursing at home.

Eligibility is determined through the EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment) program.

  1. Speak with your child’s primary physician or specialist to request a PDN referral.
  2. Your physician submits documentation to Alabama Medicaid for review and authorization.
  3. Once approved, families may select a provider such as Sunbridge Home Health Care to begin in-home services.

There are no out-of-pocket costs for PDN services covered by Medicaid. Approved nursing hours are fully funded under your child’s EPSDT benefits.

Authorized hours depend on your child’s medical needs and physician’s plan of care. Medicaid reviews and determines the appropriate number of nursing hours per day or week.

Sunbridge employs Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) trained in pediatric and in-home care. Each nurse is credentialed, background-checked, and matched to your child’s specific needs.

Yes. If approved by the care plan, Sunbridge nurses may accompany your child to school, therapy sessions, or medical appointments to ensure safety and consistent care.

Sunbridge maintains backup nurses and scheduling support to minimize interruptions in care. We coordinate directly with families to fill open shifts as needed.

As long as your child meets medical necessity requirements and remains under 21, PDN can continue with regular physician recertification.
